Wines & Beers

We love having the opportunity to expose our customers to lesser-known varietals and wines from unique regions around the world. Some of the newest wine selections at Horatius come from the Priorat region of Spain. The elevated, hilly region with rocky soil creates highly stressed vines that compete for water, resulting in deeply flavored, concentrated wines with a distinct earthy, mineral quality.

IMPORTER JORGE ORDOÑEZ
Horatius is also featuring several selections from the dynamic Spanish importer Jorge Ordoñez, including the 2007 Botani and the 2007 Viña Godeval. The Botani has become a staff favorite; it is an incredible Moscatel Seco with intense, ripe floral and flavors, yet dry on the finish. The Viña Godeval is a full-bodied white wine, filled with notes of pear and blood orange, with a long, mineral finish.

CARPE DIEM WINERY
Carpe Diem Winery in California’s Edna Valley focuses on making elegant Burgundian style wines. The Carpe Diem 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon is fresh and approachable, made with grapes from California’s Napa Valley. The wine is filled with light strawberry notes, and hints of sage and cedar. Carpe Diem’s 2006 Chardonnay hails from the Edna Valley in California’s San Luis Obispo region, and has many of the hallmarks of this elegant appellation: delicate Chardonnay flavors reminiscent of apple and pear are balanced with a rich, creamy finish.

ALTA MESA CELLARS
One of our featured wines from California is from the warm central area near Lodi. Ron Silva, a Portuguese native, opened SilvaSpoons vineyards where he specializes in growing Portuguese and Spanish varietals. The wines from his Alta Mesa Cellars are fresh and fruit friendly; a new world style made with old world varietals. The 2008 Alta Mesa Verdelho is a grassy and herbal wine made from a vineyard of cuttings originating in the Azorean islands of Portugal. The 2007 Alta Mesa Tempranillo has bright fruit character with a mellow finish.

ONE-OF-A-KIND WINE
Alves De Sousa
Abandonado 2004

This seductive, lush wine is from the Doura region of Portugal. These few bottles are some of the only remaining 2004 vintage, the vintage that launched this wine’s international reputation. The grapes are from a small abandoned vineyard where 80-year old vines were never replaced. The highest point on a terraced estate, the vines was neglected until the winery had the capability of producing small production wines. The name is derived from the nickname given this special “abandoned” vineyard. Aged for 15 months in a blend of Portuguese and French Oak, it has rich, red fruit flavor and drying tannins balanced with ripe acidity. A wine that is constantly changing in the glass, Horatius was lucky enough to procure a tiny amount of this wine. Join us at our Wine Bar to have the opportunity to try some of this truly spectacular wine.

PORTUGUESE BEER

Chocolate or Vanilla? Cheddar or Swiss? Coke or Pepsi?

In Portugal, the great rivalry is between two beers: Sagres or Super Bock.

Sagres is the beer of Lisbon, a crisp refreshing beer with a hint of citrus. Smooth and drinkable, it is great paired with seafood and spicy dishes. Super Bock is from just outside the city of Porto, and is a pale lager with a smooth and rich flavor. Try it with a favorite grilled fish dish or on a sunny afternoon while at a football match.
Which is our favorite here at Horatius? We’ll never tell.
